Ollie And The Cows

For a while now, we have been unable to venture onto Hoe Rough, as the Wildlife Trust wardens are allowing a small herd of cattle to graze there.

One of them in particular doesn’t seem to like dogs, and gave us the ‘evil eye’ when I fist noticed the cows there.

It was a lot like this one.

Now Ollie pays no attention to cows, but they certainly pay attention to him. That means I have to walk extra circuits of Beetley Meadows instead of going to Hoe Rough. Ollie doesn’t mind that at all, even though I find it boring.

But the cows are still watching…

Earlier today, i spotted the big black and white one staring at us from across the river. It carried on looking at us until we rounded a bend and were out of sight.

I will be pleased when they are back on the farm.

  1. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚cows and ollie seem to like each other. The cows might want to play with ollie, you knowπŸ€”πŸ€”. I am sure that those cows won’t hurt ollie because ollie got teeth and they got 3 stomachs 😊😊.

    1. Cows here are dangerous, Suzan. They wouldn’t play with Ollie at all. They attack lots of people every year, especially dog-walkers. One man was killed by them in Yorkshire recently, and many others have been injured.
      Best wishes, Pete. xx

      1. OkπŸ₯ΊπŸ₯ΊπŸ˜³…looks like your cows need counselling and taming. Cows in India are very nice, they don’t hurt at all. The only thing they do is sit on the road and create a jam for hours. People don’t even move them as Hindus worship them and nobody wants to hurt their feelingsπŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ but seriously are the cows there so dangerous???

  2. Cows are a pain when they’re allowed to roam where people walk dogs. All the land around us is common land (including the beach!!) and there are about 100 cows on it every year from May to December. They are getting more aggressive as well, several local people have been chased and attacked this year.

  3. Had an awful lot of experience with cows, bull, and steers when I was growing up. Nothing prettier than watching good cow dog work a herd of cattle.
When a bull charges it closes his eyes and you can get out of his way. A cow leaves her eyes open and will alter her charge when you move. You heard of bullfighting but never cowfighting for that reason.
At his age Ollie uses good judgement.

  4. I think I told this story to you once before, mea culpa, if so.
I was in southern England in 1996 for six weeks studying a graduate class about Thomas Hardy. Well, we traipsed through the fields using the public paths. There were cows eating grass and one lone cow separated. He bellowed and ran around in circles and made a disturbing fuss to the ears. He was off. I later learned Mad Cow Disease occurred. Since then, I’m not allowed to donate blood to the Red Cross…

  5. Wise to steer clear Pete, although I don’t think they would go for you, if Ollie got in their way they can kick out. We sometimes hear of farmers getting crushed, usually in cattle yards though.

Cows are very curious, I remember attending an RTA, tourist van overturned lots of casualties milling about. When we first arrived herd of cows (at least 50) in a field just doing their thing eating grass, within 5 mins they were all lined up against the fence looking over at us. Very amusing sight.

On a side note its a myth that bulls react to red, in fact it’s cows that do, bulls just get very angry being mistaken as a cow 🀣🀣🀣

  6. Cows are generally very curious. I know I won’t change your opinion of them, Pete, but you have given them a terrible press. I would never go into a field where cows have calves with them because they are very protective but, on the whole, they are not usually aggressive.

      1. I read the article, Pete, but it doesn’t say what the couple were doing in the field. I spent my childhood with cows and even now when I see cows in a field I can’t resist calling them over for a chat πŸ™‚

  7. Haha, reading this I remember the time when I and my parents where attacked by a cow once. Well attacked is maybe too strong a word, but we were walking across a meadow when a cow stormed right for us at full speed. Needless to say, we ran like bats out of hell!πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
So yeah, ever since then, I don’t trust them either Pete!😊
