Xenophobia.
This was originally a Greek word. For anyone unfamiliar with it, here’s a definition.
xenophobia
/zɛnəˈfəʊbɪə/
noun
dislike of or prejudice against people from other countries.
“the resurgence of racism and xenophobia”
Also known as ‘Fear of strangers’, this has developed in modern times to become little more than a racist ‘blame game’
“They are taking our jobs”.
“I never liked the French”.
“They want us all to be Muslims”.
“They get all the new houses”.
“The migrants all want to come to Britain for an easy life”.
“You can’t trust Arabs or Turks”.
And so on.
Since 2016, this has been fuelled by Brexit in Britain; and in America, Trump’s claims about his wall across the border with Mexico.
Then Coronavirus came along, and many people rushed to blame anyone but themselves for spreading it.
Sometimes, I have to remind myself that we live in the 21st Century.
Hear, hear!

Good call, Pete. If we don’t speak out against xenophobia, then we are complicit in that attitude becoming pervasive.

Thanks, Pete. I saw my mum change as she got old, becoming very bad temepered about things, and blaming her her woes on ‘foreigners’. I am determined not to go down that route.
Best wishes, Pete.

Somehow the less actual exposure we have to difference the more we seem to fear it. Ignorance really is susceptible to propaganda, especially when spewed from our “leaders.”

Yes, propaganda and ignorance both play their parts.

I agree, Pete, and it does seem to be getting worse. I can’t understand where all this hate comes from.

I thought it was bad enough when I was young, Mary. But it is definitely increasing now.

Undoubtedly one of the least attractive human attributes. It is to be hoped that one of the positive results of this current crisis will be more tolerance and understanding, starting in our own ‘bubbles’ and radiating outwards. Cheers, Jon.

We can indeed only hope that will happen.
Thanks, Jon.

Well said, Pete. I agree with Arlene – some people are biased and prejudiced and sadly it’s not improving.
Sending you greetings from the wet coast. We’re off to Weybourne at low tide to inspect the sperm whale on the beach. Give Ollie a big pat from me.x

I didn’t know about the whale, Dina. It is so wet and miserable, I will have to wait to see your photos of it. 🙂
Love from Beetley, Pete and Ollie. X
