This song is something fo a diversion for me, and my inclusion of it might well surprise some of you. I was always quite intrigued by the British group, Radiohead. Their frontman Thom Yorke is strange, to say the least, and the construction of their songs is unusual. I don’t actually own any of their records, but I often play their old songs via You Tube. The promotional videos are usually weird too. Like this one.
This is from 1995. Hard to believe it is 29 years since I first heard it.
Can’t get the stink off
He’s been hanging ’round for days
Comes like a comet
Suckered you, but not your friends
One day he’ll get to you
And teach you how to be a holy cow
You do it to yourself, you do
And that’s what really hurts
Is that you do it to yourself, just you
You and no one else
You do it to yourself
You do it to yourself
Don’t get my sympathy
Hanging out the 15th floor
Changed the locks three times
He still come reeling through the door
One day I’ll get to you
And teach you how to get to purest hell
You do it to yourself, you do
And that’s what really hurts
You do it to yourself, just you
You and no one else
You do it to yourself
You do it to yourself
You do it to yourself, you do
And that’s what really hurts
Is that you do it to yourself, just you
You and no one else
You do it to yourself
You do it to yourself, aw!
Self
You do it to yourself
You do it to yourself, just you
You do it to yourself, just you
You do it to yourself

When the suits and overproduction met punk, this is what happened. I always thought of Radiohead as slightly bloated punk, in the same way Prog was (more than) slightly bloated rock. However, they managed to be edgy enough for squares to be offended and still sell records and for programmers to slip them in when no one was looking. In fact a friend of mine from waaaaaay back was, might still be the programmer for NASA radio and he constantly bragged about sneaking in Radiohead, Portishead, Coldplay (kinda pop) and Sigur Ros (where Thom got inspiration).

I like Portishead too, but can’t stand Coldplay!

Coldplay always struck me as pretenders.

I’ve never listened to much, except for ‘creep’ which had big play here in the states

“Creep” is the Radiohead song that got a lot of airplay in the US.

This one is too “rowdy” for my oh so sensitive ears!

It has some ‘quiet moments’, but then gets a little rowdy.
Best wishes, Pete.

I think I have pretty wide musical tastes, and I like things which are different, provided they are musical, in the conventional sense, so I’ve always liked what I’ve heard of Radiohead, and their solo projects. I’m not familiar with this song, but I like it 😀 Cheers, Jon.

It is from their second album, and was also a hit as a single. It has stayed in my head ever since I first heard it.
Best wishes, Pete.

(1) I would be lying if I said I enjoyed that.
(2) When it comes to bathtubs and walking in the street, I prefer this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzYpHXCumII

I like Lisa Stansfield too, and will soon be featuring one of her songs in this series. I understand if you don’t care for this song, it is very much an ‘acquired taste’.
Best wishes, Pete.
