I was a fan of Robert Palmer from his early days as part of the band Vinegar Joe. Then he resurfaced in the 1980s with a cool new style and a great album, ‘Riptide’, released in 1985. This was at the peak of the music video era, and his video for the song released from the album, ‘Addicted To Love’, gave him a new audience, and a massive hit.
Having some very attractive, near-identical girls pretending to play instruments as his backing band might sound like a bad idea. But it worked so well it still looks and sounds great today. Robert sadly died in 2003, aged just 54.
The lyrics are on the video.
Such a sad loss and so young…but what a musical legacy xx

It was ahead of its time in some ways, so still sounds great decades later. Thanks, Debby.

I was never what you’d call a fan, but his work is OK. Didn’t like this one, though.
And yes, those girls do look identical . Isn’t it amazing what can be done with makeup?

We can’t all like the same things, that’s fine. But the video was very clever, and unusual at the time.

A video referred to fondly by many female artists of the era trying to break the male patriarchal and misogynistic stranglehold male artists had on the video music biz as “Dickhead of love.” He got a lot of mileage out of that template. A heart attack at 54. Sad day. Huey Lewis with better suit🤣

I much preferred him to Huey Lewis, Phil. But then I am English, and so was Robert.
Best wishes, Pete.

The fact that video is still so frequently watched now after almost 40 years is a testament to just how innovative it was.

A decade of mixed emotions for me. Divorce in my first marriage, then a second marriage four years later in 1989.

Same here. Divorce at the beginning, remarriage at the end.

I know what you mean. I’ve said music ended with the end of the 80s.

I was addicted to this song and the video. Still love it. I felt then and still do that the “design” for the video and back up band was genius… Thanks for featuring it… good memories.

This song was an instant hit with me, and not just because of the ‘backing band’, although that did help, of course! I’ve done it for karaoke a couple of times 😉 I must have heard some Vinegar Joe material in my time, but I can’t recall any of them I’m afraid.
