These days, my introduction to a new song is often when I hear a snippet of it on a TV advertisement. British readers may know the recent shampoo advert featuring this song. It has taken me a while to find the full original version, but here it is.
It has a great positive message about being a woman, as well as a catchy beat and chorus.
And here are the lyrics, which are worth reading.
Woman
Andreya Triana, Dimitri Tikovoï
I was insecure
Yes, I was frightened
To be myself seemed like a distant dream
Lost in the crowd
I closed the curtains
And I hid my hips and thighs in baggy jeans
But they said, love don’t fail if you’re trying
I knew in my heart I would succeed
When times get hard (Times get hard)
You gotta keep on fighting (Keep on fighting)
All these battles, yes, they made the best of me
‘Cause, I can rule like a queen
Be a superhero
Hold my head high the further I go
I know I can love myself more than anyone else
I am fire and the world’s gotta know
Woman
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
I’m a woman
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
When this life is full of laughter
And the lies are full of pain
I remember how (Remember how)
The early days were darker (Days were darker)
And so I stand up, time and time again
And now I’m sure
Oh yes, I’m certain
If I’m breaking down, well, it don’t make me weak
‘Cause I learnt how (I learnt how)
To stop the hurting (Stop the hurting)
By giving all my love right back to me
Oh, I can rule like a queen
Be a superhero
Hold my head high the further I go
I know I can love myself more than anyone else
I am fire and the world’s gotta know
Woman
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
I’m a woman
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Woman
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Yeah, I’m a woman
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
Yeah
‘Cause, I can rule like a queen
Be a superhero
Hold my head high the further I go
I know I can love myself more than anyone else
I am fire and the world’s gotta know
Woman
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
I’m a woman
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)
I’m a woman
(Yeah, a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful woman)
Yeah, I’m a woman
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah)

I like the song, Pete. These songs can either make the listener feel good, or perhaps worsen how the person is already feeling about herself. I like the positives here.

I am not a woman, but this song makes me feel good. And it makes me more positive about women today too. 🙂 They may still have a long way to go, but they have come far enough to have a female Vice-President in America, as well as female leaders of Germany, Scotland, and many other countries.
Best wishes, Pete.

Thats so true, Pete! Thank you for bringing positivity into my mind. Dont forget: Before we got chancellor Angela Merkel we had for more than two generations (felt like the time from Martin Luther to Willy Brandt Lol) Helmut Kohl. Now it seems we are traditionally going back. Michael

I’m so glad you do, Pam. I thought all the lady readers would like it, but that’s not the case. I can’t get this song out of my head, in a good way, and I will be buying more of her music now I know who she is.
Best wishes, Pete.

I trust you have a bathroom cabinet full of Schwarzkopf generation colour Pete . . I know how much you pamper your hair. Some photos would be nice sweetie x

I just dip my head in the bath, Ro. Sanex works well enough on sparse fluff! 🙂
Cheers, Pete. x

I don’t care for rap, and didn’t understand the words anyway..

Shaggy’s not really a rapper, but you didn’t miss much. It’s about what a ladies man he is.
If you had lived in London as long as I did, you would have understood it all. 🙂

Can’t say I’ve heard it on an advert, Pete.

It’s only a snippet on the Schwarzkopf shampoo advert. It’s on all the time on some commercial channels, Mary.
Here it is. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Many books and films now feature strong women. The reality may be somewhat different though, although not as bad as it once was.

I think songs like this can’t hurt. If they make one woman feel better about herself, that’s a positive.
Best wishes, Pete.

Hmm, mixed emotions for me here. I agree that the message is reassuring and empowering for women, which is very fine, but I just wish we could rid ourselves of this association with ‘ruling’ and monarchs; I don’t mind superheroes because they’re fictitious anyway. Musically, I can very much take it or leave it, although it is quite ‘catchy’, and I haven’t seen the advert, even inadvertently [see what I did there] 😉 Cheers, Jon.

Ruling by monarchs is outdated, I agree. In this case, I am sure it just looked good as lyrics. 🙂
The TV advert only features a snippet of the song, but it got stuck in my brain long enough for me to want to seek out that rather ‘funky’ tune! 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
