It is only the second of October. At this time of year, I am usually still wearing shorts, have the windows wide open, and wouldn’t dream of putting on the central heating.

But this October has begun more like winter than autumn, and I woke up feeling cold this morning.

After wrapping up well, I still didn’t feel right, and sitting at the PC earlier today I could feel the cold creeping into me.

At 11 am, I surrendered to the inevitable, and put the heating thermostat up to 20 C.

If it carries on like this, it is going to feel like a long winter indeed.

  2. Weirdly, in October, we begin wearing full shirts and have jackets if we are driving in evening to keep chilly winds away. But this October, heat is oppressive and we can’t sleep at night if the cooler is not on! Weird year!

  7. Not something I miss, Pete, for sure. If we were lucky we had a warm week sometime in October. I hope things get better before winter is definitely there. I also tried to hold back and not turn the hearing on until as late as I could, but it was much easier when I was working, as I didn’t spend much time at home. Fingers crossed the weather gets better. (My mother doesn’t have central heating here, although we can manage reasonably well with a small heater, as it doesn’t get that bad).

  8. we have 10 days on sunshine ahead after 4 that we have just had, but the temperature is going down and will be close to freezing at night next weekend. Mind you, as long as its dry I’ma happy bunny, i can work to warm up 🙂

  10. Dont make me fear, Pete! 😉 I only like summer, neither all the other seasons. Here in “Bavarian Siberia” they are one like the other. Our municipal administration, so the two political parties that we have, had already held their annual meetings. Now they go into hibernation. Lol xx Michael

  15. Yes it is very chilly today. I’m too mean to put the heating on yet, so I got out a heavy over cardigan I had bought off Ebay lin August ready for the winter. I hadn’t expected to be needing to wear this until November! I’ve even got my winter had warmers on and heated a hot water bottle a couple of times this afternoon!

  19. We had very hot weather last weekend, Pete, and this weekend its quite cold and pouring with rain. I love rain so I’m happy but it is unusual for us to get rain this early in the season. I think we may have a cool summer.

  23. I can tell when it’s getting cold Pete as it always attacks my bladder. 4-o to the cold during this morning’s shop. You know Winter’s starting early as soon as you hear ‘Price hike for Utilities’ they must have a good long range forecast.

      1. I have a solution to that one Pete: an electric blanket! I got mine from Argos. It has a soft quilted cover on it. You put an old sheet on your bed, then the blanket is attached on top and held in place by corner loops. Then you put your sheet over it. It takes about 20 mins to heat up (and has 3 settings). When you get in bed, it;s like lying/sitting in a warm sandwich because it also warms up the duvet. I cannot do without it as my bedroom is north facing (Victorian yard) and even in the summer it is chilly in there (unless we get 75f or above) and getting in an unheated bed is like lying on a sheet of ice. Once you have an electric blanket you can’t do without one. My first one died last year and I had 3 days before my new one was delivered. I had trouble getting to sleep, lying in that icy bed.

        1. Thanks, WN. I was actually warm and cosy when I went to sleep, but the drop in temperature woke me up at 6:30 this morning. I used to have electric blankets in the 60s, until we moved into a centrally-heated house.

  24. We are still having a few ‘too hot’ days for my liking. No real cold weather yet. This morning the doors are open and it feels like autumn should feel. Now if the temperatures outside can stay in the reasonable range that would be nice. Hope your weather warms up a bit for you, Pete.

    1. I was wearing quite a lot of clothes, Jack. But once my feet get cold, I give in and turn on the heating.
      (We have oil-fired heating, and I bought some oil at a reasonable price in late August.)

    2. Sorry to read that Jack. Are you eligible for warm home discount and the winter fuel payment? Citizens Advice could advise you on what help you could be entitled to. Being cold in the winter is awful. I spent much of my life living in freezing cold properties.The council house I grew up in during the 1970s had ice on the inside of the windows in winter!!!

      1. Oh, I know what you mean. I’m in the position of only having myself to consider, and not having a conventional central heating system, so I just wear more clothes until it gets a lot colder! 😉 The clocks going back is my potential winter depression threshold.
