  1. its unfair to compare sizes in many cases as its the land mass that one can live in makes it not the same. NZ is just bigger than Britain with 1/13th of the population but we have much more area that cannot be lived in (and then areas that are lived in shouldn’t be). Across the ditch in Aussie they can only set up cities on the coast and that is limited due to insufficient natural water.

Now there was this Texan who was visiting Portsmouth. He was spouting on about how big everything was back in Texas – the hats, the cars, the skyscrapers, you name it. This pompey chap was getting a bit peeved so he says to the Texan “how big are your boats in Texas?” “Oh we sailed over here in a fleet of luxury yachts, I’ll call them in for you. Come in yacht number 15, come in yacht number 30 etc. Are you impressed with that?” The pompey chap had had enough of this Texan and noted a British boat out the corner of his eye. So he says to the Texan “our boats are bigger” “Yeah but can you call them in on command like I did?” With that the pompey lad yells out “Come in boat number 2” and right on command the QE2 appears around the corner and drifts towards them. The Texan swallowed his hat and no more boasting was heard. Troo story.

    1. There’s an old joke about the Australian from the outback on holiday and in an English pub. He says to a local ‘I can get in my ‘ute’ on one side of my property and it takes me all day to drive to the other side.’ The local sympathises ‘I had a car like that once.’

  2. I’m a native Texan, and still live here. Yep, it’s a big state, the state line in the panhandle is closer to Canada than the tip of south Texas at the Mexican border. It takes 11 hours to drive from Dallas to El Paso, and a day and half to traverse the state from East to West. I’ve worn out cars driving around this landscape. Lividemerald2013, you should write about your experiences. I’ve lived all over the US during the 90s, and then traveled for business around the rest of it. Besides Cincinnati OH and Sag Harbor New York, Texas is the only place to live. God Bless the Alamo and Davey Crockett.

  3. I’ve driven from Texarkana to Galveston, from Galveston to El Paso by way of San Antonio, and across the Texas Panhandle on different highways. I’ve been to Space Center Houston, visited the Alamo (twice), and eaten lunch in Pecos. I could write big stories about my travels in Texas. (And by the way, I have a sister who lives in Texas.)

  4. It is massive indeed Pete…and I always tell this fact about the size of countries and our states…the entire land mass of Japan, which has 150-mil people, is the size of the single state of Montana in the US, and that state has just over one million people total!

  5. And it’s funny, but most people never think of the State of Michigan as being that big, but the distance from the top to the bottom of my home State is 1,000 miles and can take over 15 hours to drive. I have been to Texas and doubt I would ever choose it over Michigan!
