When she died at the age of 27 in 1970, I already knew of Janis Joplin from her time as the lead singer of Big Brother and The Holding Company. Her raucous voice was ideally suited to Blues and Rock, and her pop-star lifestyle of alcohol and drugs was equally as famous as her vocal talent. Then her record company posthumously released the album ‘Pearl’ in 1971, and for the first time I bought one of her records.
Many of her songs were hits in the UK as well as in America, but I have chosen a track from ‘Pearl’ that has always been my favourite of hers.
It was written by Bobby Womack.
Hard to believe she has been dead for over 53 years.
Trust in me, baby, give me time, gimme time, um gimme time.
I heard somebody say, oh, “The older the grape,
Sweeter the wine, sweeter the wine.”
Oh, my love is like a seed, baby, just needs time to grow,
It’s growing stronger day by day, yeah,
That’s the price you’ve got to pay.
Trust in me, baby, give me time, gimme time, please, a little more time.
Takes a road runner just a little bit uh-longer, dear,
Oh, to make up my mind, I gotta make up my mind.
Oh, my love is like a seed, baby, just needs time to grow,
It’s growing stronger day by day,
That’s the price that we both got to pay.
I gotta know, know that I’m ready, oh ready to settle down,
‘Cause I think too much of your loving, baby,
Yeah, I don’t wanna mess your life around!
So if you love me like you tell me that you’re doing, dear,
You shouldn’t mind paying the price, any price, any price.
Love is supposed to be that special kind of thing,
Make anybody want to sacrifice.
Oh, my love is like a seed, baby, just needs time to grow,
It’s growing stronger day by day,
That’s the price we both gotta pay.
Trust in me baby, trust in me baby,
Trust in my love, in my heart.
Keep the faith, baby, keep the faith in me, dear, in my love.
Don’t turn your face away from me, dear, oh you leave a lost girl,
Oh, don’t turn your love away, no no no no no no no,
You gotta believe in me, baby, yeah, trust me dear, oh…

I think I had previously mentioned seeing her with Big Brother in the Fillmore in San Francisco in the summer of 1967. She was very drunk and not particularly famous. I was unimpressed.

She was apparently always drunk and on drugs during live performances, one reason why I featured a track from a recording session in a studio.
Best wishes, Pete.

That makes sense. She certainly did sound better on the record I had of them.

She was far ahead of her time. Sadly, she went to her high school’s tenth reunion, just when she had become popular. She was treated like a weirdo, and never really recovered from the devastation. No wonder she turned to drugs and Southern Comfort. I still have my beloved Cheap Thrills album. Of course I memorized all the songs back in the day.

Was she the one sang From Both Sides ? I remember her being featured in a Jingle chordbook mag during the 70’s.

I don’t remember her singing that, Arlene. Do you mean the song ‘Both Sides Now’, by Judy Collins?
Best wishes, Pete.

That’s it Pete. I thought she was the one who sang it.🥰

It was a big hit for Judy Collins, who was more of a folk singer. 🙂

There I go again, such common mistake for me when blogging, lack of words. That should read ‘was she the one who…..’

(1) I’ll “like” this song if you buy me a Mercedes-Benz.
(2) We have roadrunners here in Southern Nevada. They’re quick. No way they take a little bit longer than other birds.
(3) Although this is not my favorite Janis Joplin song, my windshield wipers were slapping time to it.

I loved Janis then, and I still love her. I still have the vinyl of Big Brother and the Holding Company. Trust in Me and Little Girl Blue are two of my favorite songs. So many did not know about Janis until Me and Bobby McGee was released. They missed out on her greater works, in my humble opinion.

I agree. She is so well-known for Bobby McGee, so many did not bother to look into her earlier work.
Best wishes, Pete.
