WordPress Annoyances This Week

So far this week, I have noticed two new pointless ‘changes’ that WordPress seems to have implemented.

The first one is that using keyboard characters to generate emojis in comments or replies seems to have been removed.

So the colon and right bracket 🙂 is no longer translated as a smiley face. (Or any of the similar ones) Except when I use it in a post, like now. It would appear that this is due to the Block Editor being implemented in all reply boxes. (See below)

Secondly, my own replies to comments have been changed to the Block Editor Format. Although I still compose posts using Classic Editor, once I publish the post and want to reply to comments, I am forced to use the Block Editor to do so.

Knowing me, you can imagine that has made me ‘rather annoyed’.

Has this happened to anyone else?

  1. It seems to vary from day to day, Pete. I noticed some strange going ons with the comments, a few days ago, although I haven’t noticed the issue with the emojis. I don’t think I’ve been paying much attention, but they keep reinventing the wheel, until they’ll manage to make it stop altogether.

  2. Roll with it or use the reader. I don’t like the reader because it’s snapshots, though. Or, like right now, I’m on iOS and there are no issues other than iOS. If your PC keyboard doesn’t have an emoji button right click at the cursor and they are yours, or hold the windows logo key and . (Period) and the emoji screen will pop.

      1. The only apple devices I have are iPads and phones. I won’t play their computer game. Someone mentioned DuckDuckGo, which is okay for searches but cookies and your operating system are constantly shuffling info in and out the back door😫

  3. The block editor In comments doesn’t bother me, I just type as usual. It’s not on everyone’s blog yet though. As for emojis I use right click to insert one on the laptop (windows).

    1. I don’t seem to have that right-click option on my PC, but the tip I got yesterday is working well. (Windows key and full stop at the same time brings up an emoji menu.)

      Best wishes, Pete. x

  4. I have noticed several times this week that my blog won’t open….it just sits in a permanent holding pattern until I lose interest and cancel the request…not sure why, but considering that 60% of my daily traffic is now gone, perhaps it’s not worth the effort anymore regardless

    1. Glitches seem to affect different bloggers in different ways. It is strange that you have lost so much traffic. I am down by around 5% on this time last year, but nothing as drastic as yours.

      Best wishes, Pete.

      1. Sorry for the multiple comments but I’m a software tester at heart! You’re correct, that when I reply in the Reader comments the emojis translate, but on your blog directly, they do not. Good observation!

        1. The tip I got yesterday works well on a Windows system. Hold down the Windows key and full stop (period) at the same time, and an emoji menu appears. Just insert what you want into the text before publishing. Never worry about multiple comments, that’s not an issue for me.

          Best wishes, Pete.

  5. Yes so I notice, Block Editor is following me around.

I’ve typed a new paragraph, and yes a new block, crazy.

Anyway the reason I’m moaning is that WordPress send me a notification daily:

You’ve posted 10 days in a row on CabbieBlog! Keep up the good work.

Unfortunately 12 days ago they stopped counting (it was then over 100) and started again 2 days later. Presumably they don’t think anyone blogs daily.

Regards (non smiley face inserted here)

    1. I have never received those notifications, not even once. And I blog every day, almost without fail. Something else that is very ‘random’, obviously.

      Best wishes, Pete.

    1. What I was talking about was using the colon and right bracket, which can appear as a smile. The other way on MS Windows works easily enough. In a page of text, hold down the Windows Key and full stop at the same time, and an emoji window pops up. Select the emjoi(s) you want to include, and they appear in the text. If you are using Apple, I have no idea how that works.

      Best wishes, Pete.

      1. I have an ‘add-on’ to the menu bar at the top of the screen, Pete, and I can click on the icon to bring up the emoji menu; bit of a fiddle, but it has many emojis and other icons to choose from 😀 or should that be 🤔.

I also now have to use the block editor for comments on all blogs, and as you can see, the return key inserts a double line instead of a single line. Progress, eh? 😉

        Cheers, Jon.

          1. Sorry Pete, I forgot to mention that I use a Mac and most things seem to be different than they are on Windows. I can’t remember where I found the app, but it might be worth checking legitimate websites where you can find free software for Windows? You should be able to find a list of them by running a search; I prefer DuckDuckGo, because it doesn’t track your searches, like the well-known one does 😀

          2. Go to the keyboard on the top menu on your screen. You probably have GB British as language, click on it and you’ll see a submenu offering to show all the emojis and key board viewer. Hope this helps.
WP is driving me mad😣 since a couple of days, telling me I have 0 posts, not allowing me to post comments. I hope it works now, fingers crossed! 🤞🏻

    1. The tip from Partnering With Eagles works well if you use MS Windows. (Not sure about Apple) When you want to insert an emoji into text, hit the Windows key and the full stop (period, in American) at the same time, and an emoji window appears for you to select from.

      Best wishes, Pete.

  6. I am entering this comment into a comment block. This has been rolling across WP for quite some time. I use the Block Editor, so it’s no bother, and I can add bold and italic highlights. And, I guess I can add a list. It seems that it’s not completely rolled out, as I still find blogs with Classic comment entry forms. 😊 <- Thanks to PARTNERING WITH EAGLES’ tip about Windows & .

    1. It seems the only way for someone like me to continue in the ‘old way’ is to exclusively use The Reader, which has been left alone. (So far) Thanks for your comment, Dan.

      Best wishes, Pete.

      1. I don’t like the Reader because it doesn’t show the things bloggers add to their page. WP offers all these wonderful themes, and urges us to use them, but then they leave most of the features out of the Reader view (unless it’s changed, I haven’t been in a long time).

  7. My WP change is something I don’t even know how to describe. Sometimes, I don’t know how, but the left hand column turns black and I can’t get to a place where I can write. I have to exit and start over. ???

  8. No emojis in comments possible for me, but I still get the classic editor comments version. There is no consistency. Maybe it depends on which format one uses. Mine is an old one that I’m still able to work in.
