This is another song that was famously ‘hijacked’ by a later version. Long before Whitney Huston convinced so many people it was her song, the wonderful Chaka Khan released this original in 1978, written by Ashford and Simpson. You just know I prefer Chaka.
(Yes, all five women in the video are Chaka)
Whatever you want, whatever you need
Anything you want done baby, I’ll do it naturally
‘Cause I’m every woman
It’s all in me, it’s all in me
I’m every woman
It’s all in me
Anything you want done baby
I do it naturally
I’m every woman
It’s all in me
I can read your thoughts right now
Every one from A to Z
I can cast a spell of secrets you can tell
Mix a special brew, put fire inside of you
Anytime you feel danger or fear
Then instantly I will appear, ’cause
I’m every woman
It’s all in me
Anything you want done baby
I do it naturally
Oh, I can sense your needs like rain onto the seeds
I can make a rhyme of confusion in your mind
And when it comes down to some good old fashioned love
I got it, I got it, I got it, got it, baby, baby
I’m every woman
It’s all in me
Anything you want done baby
I do it naturally
I’m every woman
It’s all in me
I can read your thoughts right now
Every one from A to Z
I ain’t braggin’, ’cause I’m the one
Just ask me, ooh, and it shall be done
And don’t bother to compare
I’ve got it, I’ve got it, got it got it, got it
I’m every woman
I’m every woman
I’m every woman

I remember going to the disco in 1978 and dancing to songs like this. It wasn’t my favorite style, but we males went where the girls were. 🤣

I was 26 and married when this was released. But I played a lot of music at home in my free time.
Best wishes, Pete.

I’m with you, Pete. “I’m Every Woman” is Chaka Khan’s song. End of discussion. Just as Ms. Huston’s appropriating Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” was just wrong.

Agreed about Dolly. Her version was from the heart.

Definitely. I tear up every time I listen to it.

(1) “KHAAANNNN!” (Capt. Kirk excited to hear this song by Chaka Khan.)
(2) I’m actually not familiar with this song. So Whitney Huston’s version doesn’t even enter into it. So, if she can hear me from beyond this world: “Huston, we have a problem!”
(3) There are five Chaka Khans in the video. I’m trying to figure out which one has the best voice. I already know which one wears the best outfit!
(4) “I can make a rhyme of confusion in your mind. But I can’t make a rhyme of every line in this song!”
(5) Chakarayapet is a village in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The village was named after Chaka and her pet dog Raya: Chaka-Raya-Pet. (The composed name was later simplified.)
(6) Chaka Khan looks remarkably like Yvette Marie Stevens. Probably just a coincidence.
(7) And speaking of coincidences, this is my seventh comment about a singer with a seven-part name: Chaka Adunne Aduffe Yemoja Hodarhi Karifi Khan.

Good to know that a village in India was named after her and dog. I wonder if I can get Norfolk County Council to name a village after me and Ollie? 😃
Best wishes, Pete.

Yes, I remember the hijacked version. Warmest regards, Ed

Almost everyone does, hence my ‘gentle reminder’.

I don’t like that songs can be hijacked. Seems so wrong however they legitimise it.

It’s fair enough to sing another version of a hit song, but when I say ‘hijacked’, I usually mean that subsequent generations end up associating the song with the ‘wrong’ person. In this case, Whitney Huston.
Best wishes, Pete.

Glad to hear it, Beth. It was tragically overshadowed by the later version from Whitney.

I remember this one from Chaka Khan. To cover a song is considered a compliment but I agree this one is best.

Thanks, Darlene. Whitney was a great singer, but I get miffed when people think hers is the only version.
Best wishes, Pete.

I suppose young people may think that. The writers should get the credit as without them, there would be no songs. This song was written by the team of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. They get royalties whoever sings their song. Maybe I should be writing songs instead of books!

Yes, I credited them in the text, a wonderful team of songwriters.
