Blogging Glitches: An Update

Following on from yesterday’s post about issues with replies to comments, this appeared to be fixed (for now) just after 8pm last night.

Thanks to everyone for your advice and suggestions, I am sorry I was unable to reply to most of them.

What made me enraged yesterday was that I pay £84 a year for a Premium Plan. As well as giving me extra space for images and no ads on my blog posts, it is supposed to provide me with instant ‘Live Chat’ to resolve problems.

In the past, this has worked reasonably well, but recently the format has changed slightly, and it now seems to be generated by AI, not humans. As a result it doesn’t work, because it fails to recognise the issue you are asking for help with, or directs you to routine WordPress information pages that most bloggers are very familiar with. Then it declares ‘No issues found’, and deletes the request.

I think this is bordering on fraud from WordPress, as it is one of the major selling points of a paid plan.

All of this made me so angry and stressed yesterday, I have decided to take a couple of days off to calm down, and have a rethink. The last episode of the serial ‘Julia’ has been published, and I am currently able to reply to comments and to comment on most blogs I follow.

So I will hopefully be back as usual next Monday.

Blog Images And Copyright Issues

David over at https://cabbieblog.com/2023/10/10/copyright-conundrum/ has highlighted an issue for bloggers (like me) who use images found online to illustrate posts. The new technology of AI is being deployed to find those who have used images that are copyrighted, even if the user was unaware that any copyright existed. They are then asked to pay a fee of £400 for each image used on their blog.

Regular readers will know that I use many ‘uncredited’ images on my photo posts, and also images that I do credit to the original photographer. Now I am going to have to seriously rethink the future of such posts on this blog.

Historical Figures Brought To Life

I found this on You Tube, and thought it was impressively done.

Using ancient statues, famous paintings, and photographs, the film makers applied AI to give accurate colour representations and movements to the historical figures shown in this 9-minute film. Heads move, eyes open and close, and there are some facial expressions too.

One of the better uses of AI technology, in my opinion.

A.I. In Writing: ArtSore, A New Website

The founder of Longshot Island has created a new website/magazine to publish work created with the use of A.I., alongside conventional writing. You will be paid for successful submissions, and he is interested to explore this new genre. This is a contentious area indeed, and sure to spark much debate into the future.

Here is what Daniel has to say about ArtSore.

This is pretty exciting, I think. I’ve been lured out of retirement to start a totally new kind of magazine!

AI is pretty controversial in its youth. Just as men and women compete in different events in the Olympics, so people and AI should not be in the same category.

In ArtSore magazine, you let us know when you submit if your work was assisted by AI or was a purely human only effort. Each month we’ll pick one from each category and publish the two wins online. At the end of the year we’d like to do an anthology of the best works!

We pay one cent per word as we want this to be about art, not money. (I’ve run the highest paying magazines in the world and can tell you more money does not make better art.) If things go well, we’ll pay more later. Nobody is losing money to a machine as a person gets paid either way, A) AI assisted or B) human-only.

AI has a distinct style. But beauty is still in the eye of the beholder. You have to know if the AI generated stories are good before you submit. Running off a thousand stories overnight means you have to read all those stories, no easy task, just ask any publisher.

We’d love to see your work!

Find us at ArtSore dot com. We really appreciate it.
