With all the nonsense from The White House driving us crazy, and news reports of freedom protestors so incredible to behold, it is easy to think that America has lost its way, in the midst of this pandemic.

So here is something good for a change. Something positive to look at, and to make us realise that not everyone is selfish and heartless, or strutting around carrying guns and wearing military-style clothing. This is the news that we rarely see reported on the BBC here.

My thanks to Frank for featuring it on his excellent blog.

  1. How beautiful! Most people are coming together. Like this. What you see on the news is but a small fraction of what is happening. The protesters are few and far between. Shame on the press for always reporting sensationalism, even when it is a tiny piece of what is happening. Best to you, Pete.

  3. People on the East and West Coast so often disparage those who live in “Flyover Country.” Northeastern Kansas is next door to Kansas City, where I spent many years of my life. It’s no coincidence that this part of the U.S is described by the folks who live there as the “Heart of America.”

  6. Cindy Bruchman could not have said it better. Our nation is incredibly diverse—not only in terms of the obvious factors like race, creed, and diversity—but also of circumstance and opinion. Our media outlets fail us constantly with 24-hours-a-day hyperbole, teasing but inaccurate headlines, and a steady stream of “expert” talking heads with many different opinions and levels of knowledge. Back here on Main Street, we are doing our best to help each other, be kind, and weather the storm, whose duration and exact nature are unknown (that includes the various “models” that circulate worldwide). From a true and pure scientific perspective, we won’t have a real handle on this situation for several years. In the meantime, we should all just do the best we can, keep faith and hope and love—and prudence— in our hearts. We’re not lost. Our politicians (all of them) and media—well, that’s another story.

    1. Thanks, Angela. The news in the UK naturally focuses on the sensational and the ‘crazy’. I saw this video on Frank’s blog, and thought it was a nice counterpoint to all that.

  9. I saw the video. It is beautiful. There are 328 million people in the United States. I say to all people who watch the media and presume to think that the gloom, doom, and craziness is representative of all of us here in this great country–don’t be fooled. The best of us have embraced rugged individualism. We work hard. We play hard. We strive and give and love.
    Never forget the media is a business cloaked with the sole purpose of ratings. Hyperboles abound and the worst case situations from coast to coast are selected and used to keep people in fear. If you have ever seen the movie ‘Nightcrawler’, then you know the underbelly of the snake.
    I take what both sides of the snake pit say with a pound of salt. I focus on my family, my community, and the states where loved ones reside.
    The television is turned off most of the day in my home.
    Three cheers to the millions of selfless people who do their part to help their fellow citizen.

  11. South Florida has been coming together as a unit during this time. Total strangers coming out of the woodwork to help everyone else! It is fantastic to see. As I’ve always said – horrific times bring out the best and worst in people. This (thank goodness) is bringing out mostly the best!!
