Six years ago this week, we were in the middle of an unusual spell of very hot weather, much like we have seen over the last few days. I wrote this about it at the time, and it is remarkable how nothing has changed since.
As Irving Berlin once wrote, “We’re having a heat wave, Tropical heat wave”. The last couple of weeks have seen temperatures rising in Beetley, and every day has been sunny and hot. Even though it makes it hard to sleep at night, I’m not complaining. For too long, we have had damp and cold, followed by rain and damp. This sight of summer is long overdue, and most welcome. Ollie has been feeling the heat though. His coat may be short, but it is thick, and he is listless and uncomfortable. His only relief is to get into the river, something he does frequently on his walks.
I have had to limit the scope of our usual dog walks for now. The other places we go do not have access to any water, and Ollie would get far too hot. I probably would too. There is shade and breeze available…

I suppose it is better than all the rain you often get. Best to you, Pete.

I certainly prefer it to rain, Jennie. Every time! 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

Here it’s getting unbearable as well. I was exercising this morning, and I am convinced the amount of sweat didn’t match the effort, but I was drenched. Keep cool, Pete!

The weather changed on Saturday, strong winds and a maximum of 19 C during the day. I actually woke up feeling cold during the night!
Best wishes, Pete.

I have never gotten used to storms not breaking the heat pattern as they did where I used to live. I think parts of England and the Pacific Northwest must have similar weather patterns.

We certainly share excessive rainfall, and summers that are mostly quite cool.

When I see the Cornwall garden blogs everything looks very familiar. I know you are farther north and east, so I expect your native plants are a little different.

Yes, we cannot grow those semi-tropical plants here. Cornwall is over 400 miles SW of Beetley.

I knew it was SW but didn’t realize how far.

I am sure you will overcome it, Pete! But take care for Ollie. All the best, Michael

He’s is a really poor situation. Seems his Chinese genes are not helpful living generations in the UK. Maybe he would need an opium whistle?;-)

Hoping you find some respite from the heat, Pete. We are just in the rainy season now and we get big thunderstorms every night!

Thanks very much. The heat broke down yesterday, and it didn’t get above 19 C. The week to come is forecast for 20-22 degrees, which is more normal for us.
Best wishes, Pete.

That sounds a lot better. We are having nice weather here, too. It rains lightly every day and this means it is not as boiling. In the summer we reach 40 C – not fun.

40 C would be too much for me! 🙂

Yes, too much for anyone. Markus’ European bum was melting!

It’s summer there and it’s rainy season here. It always rains at night, that type that I love, not so heavy but just enough to wet the grass,

I wish it only rained at night here, Arlene. 🙂

I’m not going to tell you what it’s like in Alabama!😎

I can imagine it is twice as bad. But most hot southern states have a lot of air-conditioning. That is something almost unknown in domestic accommodation in the UK.
Best wishes, Pete.

Our little dog hated the hot weather and so did I. I think it was the humidity as much as the sunshine. It made my ankles swell up. It is cooler today, but very windy. The lawn is crisp and yellow but we are expecting rain. They say variety is the spice of life!

Ollie was not happy when it got over 28 C. He stopped running around, and just stood in the river. I prefer anything to rain, so didn’t mind too much. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

I love that 2 days of sun constitutes a heat wave! 🤣🤣

I know what you mean, but we had it warm for those two weeks in 2014, from 28-32 degrees every day. Then the similar weather for three days this week made it feel the same! 🙂 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.

I am jealous….when it rains here it turns to steam and just makes the heat even worse…..chuq

Does once every six years count as unusual? Seems to me we get ‘unusually hot’ weather every year these days.

Not up here mate! London is usually a lot hotter than Beetley, with all that concrete and buildings to retain the heat. It broke last night, so only 18C today. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
