A collection that dates from the early 1840s, to the turn of the century. The video runs for 6 minutes and has interesting black and white photos from the period covering aspects of everyday life, as well as featuring some historical figures. (Only one photo has been colourised)

Wonderful, Pete.

I am fortunate to have received many photos from the late 1800’s from my grandparents, through my mother, through my brother who put them on a DVD. I printed them out just in case the technology of DVD becomes extinct(as it already seems to have done.) Anyway they are a real treasure and I share them occasionally on my blog.

You are lucky to have so many photos, including those of you as a child. I wish I had that many of my family.
Best wishes, Pete.

Swimwear and tennis attire had not quite achieved modern standards. I also noticed that the locomotives looked a wee bit outdated compared to today’s bullet trains. It takes a very keen eye, but I was able to determine that these photos were not taken in the 21st Century.

I enjoy seeing how people looked “back then” and I always wonder if people in another hundred years will look at images of the early 2000’s and think how quaint we seem. (?)

I have no doubt they will do just that, Carolyn.

There is a sense in that while photographs were not that old, they already had an idea of how to pose for them. But I suppose that was partially due to the fact that one has to be still for a relatively long time to be photographed. Warmest regards

Yes, long shutter speeds, and photographers who ‘instructed’. 🙂

One of the best things about the Internet, the preservation of history.

I couldn’ agree more, Pete. The internet has been such a boon to historical preservation, including the stories of those who have passed on.

Love these. Annie Oakley seems so tightly corseted it’s a wonder she could breathe!
