A Nicer Kind Of Dream: Spaniels

When my wife woke me up as she left for work this morning, I was in the middle of an intense and vivid dream.

In the past, I have written about my dreams on here. They are mostly pleasant, but sometimes have mysterious elements, or flashbacks to my past life in some way.

One dream I wrote about took me to a city in America, walking around a lake. It was a city I had never seen, in a country I have never visited, but the details I recalled were all uncannily accurate, according to many who responded in the comments.

My trip to Madison

In 2019, I had a dream about Chinese noodles, of all things.

The Noodle Dream

Then earlier this year, I wrote about a more disturbing dream, involving being on the edge of a cliff.

A Very Strange Dream

The dream I woke from this morning was still quite strange, but overwhelmingly happy. I was walking in a European city, definitely not England, as I could tell from the architecture, cobbled streets, and tram lines in the streets. It had been raining, and was probably early evening. There were no other people around, and I seemed to know where I was going.

And I was carrying two tiny black and white Spaniel pups. They were up close to my neck, and I could feel the warmth of their bodies, and the softness of their floppy ears. They couldn’t have been more than twelve weeks old, and seemed to be accustomed to me carrying them around.

I walked past a large fountain at the centre of the junction of four major roads. It had a statue in the centre from which four jets of water were gently flowing, as if the pump inside had broken. Then I spotted the lights of an old-fashioned Art-Deco style cinema ahead, and the name ‘KINO’ in large red neon. As I got closer, I could see it was showing the film ‘The Third Man’, a big favourite of mine. The poster had the name ‘Der Dritte Mann’, and I knew what that was, though I don’t speak German. I went inside, still carrying the Spaniels, and a lady looked at me from behind the cash desk.

Shaking her head, she pointed at the dogs and said, “Kein eintritt mit hunden”. I nodded, understanding what she said, and walked back out into the street.

That’s when I woke up, remembering every detail of the dream, even the feel of the cobbles under my shoes. So I know I was somewhere in a German-speaking country, and where the architecture is distinctly European. I could read and understand German, and I felt as if the Spaniels were still resting on my neck. I have no explanation for this vivid dream.

But when my eyes opened, I felt happy.

  1. you should research dreams . . or I will have to tell you! Detailed vivid dreams are very significant. I wish I had Shailys’ ability-about the future, though I did have one and avoided a car accident, once. I have dreamed of historical houses and lives. I visited one of them and knew the details! Oddly, I took my grandmother to the same house and not confessing. She too had dreamed about the same house!! My aunt was with us and she was so spooked she left! True story. Happy sweet dreams friend!

        1. I think Ollie will have to be my last ever dog. He has been such an unusual companion, I don’t think I could ever get over his loss. I have to hope he dies before me, which sounds bad. But he would be inconsolable if I wasn’t around.
          Best wishes, Pete.

  2. I was thinking about writing about dreams this morning as I had too vastly different ones this morning, but I think your dream was more peaceful, so I’ll dwell on your dream if you don’t mind. Warmest regards,Theo

  3. This is so interesting, and what a delight to wake up from a happy dream in such unsettled times. Thank you for sharing. PS I love “The Third Man,” too, and spaniels!

  4. Your dreams are fascinating, Pete. The fact that you remember the German spoken words, even though you don’t speak German, is remarkable. And, the feel of the puppies… on and on. Keep sharing your dreams!

    1. Thanks Jennie. This dream was so ‘real’, I can replay it all in my head. And it is so rare to have such a comforting dream, I am happy to be able to remember every detail. šŸ™‚
      Best wishes, Pete.

  5. The power of subconscious mind is something that still baffles Psychologists. There are medical conditions where people are suddenly speaking languages they have never heard before, see future clearly, meet people we have never met before. It could be a part of mass conscious that we share with all human kind like bird that fly in flocks, or animals that hunt together. But I have seen snippets of future, question papers from most difficult exams, read comics that was published 15 days later and visited places that I visited an year later. I met my first husband in dreams when both of us were still children (I should have understood the warning! šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£) while in reality I met him when I turned 21. So, we have powerhouse in brain.

    1. We certainly have much going on inside our minds that we are barely aware of, Shaily. Perhaps it is just as well that we cannot realise the full potential of our brainpower, as I doubt I would be able to cope. šŸ™‚
      Best wishes, Pete.

  6. It’s nice to have a happy dream – love the spaniel pups and can imagine how warm and suggly they felt. I wonder if Julie hadn’t woken you when she was leaving for work if you would have remembered this dream?

  7. Dear Pete,
in a way, we can speak and understand all languages, at least if they are from the same language family. All these languages share a similar deep structure which is stored in the subconsciousness where the symbolic language of dreams is stored as well. Therefore quite some dreamers speak and understand languages they had no idea they knew them.
If I understand it right, then the city is quite romantic with cobblestones, a fountain etc. and it often rains in such dreams because rain is connected with fertility and is erotic, that’s this dancing in the rain. And early evening, well, that’s your age, isn’t it? I suppose the pups symbolise projects of yours, projects you love.
The city could be Vienna where The Third Man was set. Seen it symbolically, the question is who or what personifies the third man?
Enjoy your dream. Maybe a nice inspiration for a story?
    Wishing you a wonderful weekend

    1. Thanks for your thoughts and interpretation, KB. It could have been Vienna indeed, or perhaps Leipzig, as I have been to Leipzig in the past. I assume the cinema and film was something to do with my love of cinema, and perhaps the spaniels represented my love of dogs. But it was a nice dream to have, whatever the reason. šŸ™‚
      Best wishes, Pete.

      1. That’s the kind of dreams I enjoy very much too, Pete. Tiny, lovely black and white Spaniels, watch out for them in future dreams. šŸ™‚

  8. It’s funny what our subconscious comes up with. I too have vivid dreams and last night I was also on a foreign country, possibly Iran! Eating food I am sure I have not eaten before.
