A Follower Milestone

When I opened WP this morning, I saw on the side column that I had now tipped over 8,000 followers

I checked the Insights, and these are the totals.

WP Followers. 7607
Email only followers. 44
Social Media Followers. 356

Total. 8007

Regular readers will know that I always mark such milestones. The last time was when the number of followers exceeded 7,000.

As usual, I would advise everyone that the number means very little. Well over 2,000 of those were only trying to sell me something. Around another 2,000 or so only followed hoping I would follow back, then never looked at my blog again when I didn’t do that.

Far better to have 750 followers who read your posts and leave comments, than 20,000 who never look at your blog.

To all my genuine followers, old and new, I once again send my sincere thanks.

  1. It’s a credible achievement by any standard Pete. A reflection of who you are and what you mean to so many people out there. Yes there is a faithful few within the hoards who throng who draw inspiration and not reveal themselves openly. But you’re doing well and I wish you fair weather in the day’s ahead.

    1. Thanks, Cheryl. I do mark these milestones, but I was more impressed to be informed of 500,000 total blog views a few days earlier. Views and comments are much better than so many followers who don’t actually follow. ๐Ÿ™‚
      Best wishes, Pete.

    1. Yes, at least four hours, Cindy. Sometimes more, depending on what else I have to do. But I don’t have to work, so that’s a lot of spare time. And I enjoy it of course.
      I hope you are well.
      Best wishes, Pete. x

  2. “I tipped over 8,000 followers.” In the context of Time, this is true of the domino effect, where each domino is tipped over following the previous one’s fall (Domino #317’s fall follows that of #316). In the context of Space, the opposite is true, where each domino is felled by the one that follows it (Domino #316, which is behind #317, causes #317 to fall).

  3. WOOT! Congrats. That’s very hard to do, something I can’t aim as a sporadic blogger but the important thing is that you enjoy it regardless.

    Best,

  4. Congratulations Pete! A wonderful milestone. But I know what you mean about ‘followers.’ I seem to have gotten quite a few lately that are businesses or only looking to get their name out there, with no intention of reading my posts. Oh well. We do what we can!

    1. I think it is best to discount around 80% of apparent ‘followers’, and just stick with the great blogging friends you know you can count on. But I have a habit of recording these ‘milestones’. ๐Ÿ™‚
      Best wishes, Pete.

  5. Congrats!! That’s such a huge number that I couldn’t even imagine…. Until you broke it down… And it’s so true… I have even less followers but I know half of them are spammers as you describe! I really just appreciate the comments more than the likes and followers now!

    1. That’s the best way to look at it, BB. If all of those 8,000 actually left a comment every day, I would have to employ a secretary to answer them. (Or two secretaries!) ๐Ÿ™‚
      Best wishes, Pete.

  6. I agree with your opinion about the significance of the numbers, Pete: if it has to come to a choice, rather a modest number of serious followers than a humungous number of barely interested followers. Congratulations, anyway! Cheers, Jon.

    1. I have always marked the numbers, but in reality I suppose I have around 800 real followers who read some or most of my stuff on a regular basis. That’s fine with me.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  7. Whilst you’re wise to discount a proportion of the followers as bots or people trying to sell you stuff, I suspect that everybody has pretty much the same proportion. So you’re up there with the great and the good ๐Ÿ™‚
