My brother did that for year and always got the late night rides. They were usually drunk and fairly scary, and I don’t think they paused to think to ask him anything.
You have friendly passengers. In India, people consider it beneath them to talk to the driver. Once my aunt asked the driver about his family. He nearly wept with joy. and then spoke about his life for hours (we were on a seven day trip).
Driving a taxi in the London suburbs, everyone wants to talk to you. But they rarely know how to start a conversation, so always ask if you have been busy. To ease the boredom, I used to make things up. One frequent lie I used to tell was that I was a deserter from the French Foreign Legion. Even though I was only 22, they all seemed to believe me. 🙂
Best wishes, Pete.
Overheard:
T. Bickle: “Been busy?”
P. Johnson: “You talkin to me? You talkin’ to me? You talkin’ to me? Well then who the hell else are you talkin’ to? You talkin’ to me? Well I’m the only one here drivin’ this cab!”
