Traditional British Democracy: 2023 Style

It will not be news to you that the coronation of Charles III is underway in London today. Tradition, pomp, ceremony, a celebration of British values. Telling us all what a wonderful country we are blessed to live in. A free country, a democracy.

But this might be news to you.

Only around 55% of Britsh people want a monarchy. There are active groups campaigning for a republic, and the abolition of the right of people to rule this country just because their ancestors did. One large group of anti-monarchists is called ‘Republic’. It is a vocal organisation that arranges peaceful protests against members of the royal family, and the whole concept of a monarchy.

However, today they are not going to be allowed to do that. Earlier this morning, the leader of Republic was arrested. Then police removed protest placards from hired trucks. Following that, they arrested more members near the trucks containing the placards.

Hard to believe, in this wonderful democratic country?

Here’s the proof, something you might not see on any TV news channel.

  1. I heard about this on Twitter, but I don’t recall seeing anything about it on the news here, although I was busy on Saturday with a local event, so I might have missed the comments. You know what my thoughts are on this topic, Pete. A sorry state of affairs.

  2. It seems time is changing, and the Britains should take advices from their sisters and brothers in France. 😉 As long as the term “UK” is able to bring tourists and money, i think the Parlamentarian Monarchy will persist in the UK. You haven’t seen our TV stations’ transmissions, Pete! It had sounded like most of the Germany wanted their monarchy back. Lol xx Michael

  3. Of course this news never made it here. Freedom of speech, and a peaceful protest, should have been allowed. Hubby and I watched some of the event, and just so you know, I told him Beetley Pete would NOT be watching or supporting the coronation. 🙂

  4. Actually, I would expect republicans, democrats and a host of others to protest the monarchy. However what I don’t quite get is the Republicans here trying to overturn our republic. Warmest regards, Ed PS, your democratic tendencies were not completely overturned. Keep it up.

  5. We need some of that “Repression” here in the United States and I believe it should begin by rounding up and imprisoning all the right wing anti-democracy nut cases– and throwing away the keys. There are always going to be some people who throw their lot in with dissidents who want to destroy the prevailing form of government and replace it with something else. The problem is that the “Something Else” is usually far more repressive than the system that the traitors install. I am glad when patriotic police actually do their sworn duty. I wish we had more of it here in America.

    1. The trouble here is that the police are arresting innocent people, John.
They should be arresting half the people inside the Abbey instead.
      Best wishes, Pete.

      1. Is that the same as saying that our poor innocent Proud Boys who did nothing but peaceful protests were unjustly dealt with? The “Not My King” crowd have every potential to devolve into something that isn’t innocent at all. Yes? No? Why? Why Not?

        1. They are nothing like the Proud Boys, John. The ‘why not’ is because they have been arond for a very long time and never have. I see no reason why that would suddenly change. England is very different to America, despite sharing the same launguage.
          Best wishes, Pete.

    2. I do not disagree with you. I should point out that those “right wing anti-democracy nut cases” would like to do the same to us. they are deluded into thinking they are the Americans.
      Warmest regards, Ed

      1. Dear Ed — I have now included your blog on my favorites list and will be referring to it often …Great Job! — Thank you for your kind and encouraging response. I agree with you that the right wing radicals have been deluded into believing they are the only REAL Americans — (emphasis on “REAL) — and that is a dangerous mindset.

  6. I find this quite shocking and this is how peaceful protesters get treated? It would make me all the more determined. I think that is called repression and I never expected to see it in Britain.

      1. The rich are getting nervous because they’ve allowed the lower classes to get “uppity”. Can’t have that, can we? It will get very dark here too if the far right get their way. There has been a proposal in Florida I think, that female high school students be required to report their menstrual cycles. It outrages me and I know just how I would react if it was me. They would get the monthly evidence delivered to their desk. They are already banning all sorts of books and it has been demonstrated to them that using their criteria they must also ban the Bible. I am so glad I am not young!

    1. I didn’t watch it, just caught a few moments while I was getting ready to take Ollie out. The whole oudated nonsense seems ridiculous to me, especially at a time when people can’t pay their bills even when they have a decent job..
      Best wishes, Pete.

  7. Not news to me it’s one of the main stories on the front page of BBC news website. They didn’t round up all of them though and there were still loads chanting down with the monarchy and such so at least it wasn’t stopped all together.

  8. A peaceful protest should have been allowed; the royals know where they stand, but how could they not? Protests are acceptable; if you don’t hold them as we do in the US, burning people’s businesses, shooting, and looting would be unacceptable.

    1. There would almost certainly have been no violence, Phil. But it seems that even holding a placard and protesting the monarchy is no longer to be allowed in this country.
      Best wishes, Pete.

  9. I think Americans love this stuff simply because we can’t have one ourselves. A bit of fairy tale and pomp, and historical garb. It’s often cited that the Kennedy’s was some page out of “Camelot”.. the closest we’ve come. I have no idea why actually. If anything, the Royals have a uniform for any occasion, and if there is no occasion they make one up.
Given Diana’s popularity over here, Camilla is not too popular. In fact, my significant other thought it rather funny that they chose the title of Queen Consort given the slang “consort” here is a man’s mistress. Which seemed to fit her actual role back in the Diana days.
I suppose the pageantry in 4K is impressive. Far better than that old grainy black & white from Elizabeth’s coronation.

    1. After the coronation, she is going to be known as ‘Queen Camilla’, something I suspect was her plan all along, Doug.
(Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert, was always known as ‘The Prince Consort’, so it is not unusual here.)
      Best wishes, Pete.

    1. Sadly, we no longer have a ‘healthy and confident’ democracy in this country, Beth. Instead we have a Right-Wing government with a huge majority, changing laws to suit its own agenda.
      Best wishes, Pete.

    1. I trust Jack, that spending £100 million of taxpayer’s money during austerity and Tory-led cost of living problems, and banning the right to protest this, is not as important as the Coronation itself?

    2. I am indeed, Jack, and have never made any secret of it. I have nothing against those who want to enjoy such things, (my wife is watching it on TV) but I sincerely believe others with the opposite view should have the right to protest .
      Best wishes, Pete.

  10. If ever there was an advert for being a republic, this is it. It is shameful that peaceful protesters are being rounded up. I don’t condone violence, but I can’t help but look at how the French exercise their rights to protest, and actually get somewhere. Here, we sleep-walk into oblivion.
